What is a Thermographic Imaging Inspection?
A thermographic imaging inspection involves the use of a specialist thermal imaging camera to film components of an electrical system. This information allows the trained operators to assess any areas of risk or potential problems and recommend repairs or replacements of damaged or worn components within the system.
All electrical equipment generates thermal energy that is related to the amount of current passing through it (load) and the amount of resistance. As equipment ages, it generally deteriorates and emits a greater amount of electromagnetic radiation and heat.
With the thermal imaging camera we can detect and record this information pictorially with highly visible thermal images. This procedure is non-disruptive to your power supply and involves no downtime to your business.
How is Thermographic Imaging of any benefit to me?
There are several ways in which thermographic imaging inspections can be of value to your business. Firstly, it can prevent costly losses and downtime caused by loss of power through failure of system components.
Secondly, it can minimise maintenance costs by identifying faults before they fail and possibly damage other components. All this can be done during normal operation and without any disruption to the electrical supply.
Thirdly, it can help to establish a preventative maintenance program that will manage the risks associated with electricity and demonstrating your “Duty of Care” and Occupational Health and Safety commitment.
How does it work ?
All movement of electricity generates a level of heat. This heat increases at points of contact where the electricity is effectively arcing across what can often be minute gaps in the circuit. These weak points are invisible to the naked eye, but with the help of thermal imaging we can identify any potential points of weakness long before they become a problem.
Often these problems are as simple as re-fixing an electrical contact or replacing a worn or faulty component. A comprehensive thermal imaging inspection will identify all these points and determine the urgency of their repair.
How often should Thermographic Imaging Inspections occur ?
This will depend on several factors including the level of risk, exposure levels, the type of plant/equipment and your commitment to preventative maintenance. Usually this will involve inspections occurring at least every six to twelve months. One of our representatives can discuss the options with you in order to establish a documented preventative maintenance program.
